An early interest in trees and the environment led Lee to pursue a college degree in forestry. However, his focus gradually shifted towards the performance of landscape plants and ecology in our daily built environments. This shift prompted him to transition into the emerging field of Arboriculture, which was only available at two college-level programs at the time. After earning his degree in Arboriculture and Ornamental Horticulture, he went on to obtain an Agricultural Economics degree from Cornell University.

Lee Gilman arboristLee Gilman & Associates, LLC, founded in 2008, is dedicated to integrating plants into architectural themes within the built environment. Our interdisciplinary approach leverages synergies between the fields of arboriculture, forestry, horticulture, and agriculture, landscape design, site design, and woodland design, plant health care, ecology, pest management, and consulting with their corresponding professional standards and applied sciences.

Lee’s professional career began in the tree and landscape industry, where he took on responsibilities for overseeing plant performance assessments and pest management operations in the Denver metro market. This role marked the beginning of his continuous refinement of diagnostic processes and his ability to enhance the performance of ornamental landscape plants.

Lee then relocated to work with Bartlett Tree Experts where he managed an operation growing urban trees and shrubs on Staten Island in New York City. This role presented numerous challenges, including managing a diverse range of plants, pests, and abiotic urban stress factors. Over five consecutive years, Lee consistently ranked as the company’s top-producing representative in providing integrated pest management (IPM) and plant health care (PHC) services.

During this time, Lee began actively participating in the administrative boards of various professional groups, serving at both regional and state levels. These contributions led to his recognition by the New Jersey Arborist Association with their Arborist of the Year award.

Lee Gilman cutting treeLee’s career next took him to New Hampshire, where he worked as a Products and Services Developer for the Tree Care Industry Association. In this role, Lee expanded his experience by developing production, safety, regulatory compliance, and business management support products for the tree care industry.

Lee’s expertise and contributions have made him a respected figure in the tree and landscape industry.

In 2026, the firm shifted its focus to technical consulting services and educational outreach. Our hands-on plant care services were transferred to Bartlett Tree Experts, a long-standing associate. Currently, Lee Gilman & Associates primarily provides information to assist decision-makers in various areas, including plant diagnostics and performance, tree risk assessment, personal injury, timber trespass, chemical trespass, and construction damage mitigation. Furthermore, we offer support for forensic investigations, encompassing litigation support and expert witness services.
